Abstract

This research analyzes the consequences of restricting religious rights at religious heritage sites, specifically the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif complex in Jerusalem. It examines how such restrictions disrupt interfaith relations in a location revered by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, which presents both opportunities and challenges for sharing religious spaces. The study utilizes secondary data to explore the history of access violations, conflicts related to governance, and disputes concerning religious rights in Jerusalem. The study's findings highlight the complex nature of conflicts over religious historic sites, which involve multiple contributing factors and often result in protracted disputes. The underlying causes of these struggles are rooted in theological nationalist aspirations and perceived threats to religious identity. The research emphasizes the importance of policymakers and religious leaders respecting the diverse religious nature and delicate significance of heritage places. It advocates for maintaining the historical Status Quo agreement at Jerusalem and Bethlehem while addressing valid concerns through transparent discussions rather than taking unilateral actions that violate human rights or exacerbate tensions. The insights gained from the Temple Mount model can provide valuable guidance for the preservation of other contested religious properties. They also emphasize the significance of promoting tolerance among religious groups and respecting diverse beliefs.
